In The Fox Experiment, players embark on a captivating journey of domestication, breeding their own domesticated foxes over the course of the game. The experiment, which began in 1958 with Demitri Belyaev and Lyudmila Trut, involved selecting foxes from a large group that reacted to humans with more curiosity and less aggression. Their goal was to recreate the process that led to domestication thousands of years ago by selecting the friendliest pups to become parents in each generation.

Each round of the game represents one breeding generation, where players select a pair of fox parents to breed. They then roll dice according to the traits they have, attempting to create whole trait symbols to mark on their pup cards. These pups then go on to become parents in the next round, allowing players to strategically build their domesticated fox line.

To achieve victory, players must be strategic in the foxes they choose to breed, as the right ones will help them complete studies and please their patrons, earning them points. The game features four engaging phases in each round, from fox selection to research, where the foxes' traits and attributes play a pivotal role in the players' success.
